 Curriculum

Listed below are the many subjects that we will seek cover over the duration of each semester and for our summer camp programs. Our course material is not limited to the below subjects and will involve more in depth training and reviewing of material to ensure students retain as much information as possible.

[ A I R ]

Reading Weather Patterns: Learning how to interpret clouds, wind direction, and changes in atmospheric pressure to forecast weather conditions. Campers will gain skills in identifying patterns that indicate fair weather, approaching storms, or other atmospheric phenomena.

Sun Exposure: Understanding the importance of sun safety and the potential risks of overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Campers will learn about sunscreen application, protective clothing, and seeking shade during peak sun hours to prevent sunburn and reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Principles of Electrical Storms: Studying the formation and behavior of electrical storms, including thunderstorms and lightning. Campers will learn about the atmospheric conditions that lead to thunderstorm development, lightning safety measures, and the science behind thunder and lightning.

Hurricane and Tornado Safety: Understanding the characteristics and hazards of hurricanes and tornadoes, and how to prepare for and respond to these severe weather events. Campers will learn about evacuation procedures, emergency supplies, and staying informed through weather alerts during hurricane and tornado season.

Bird Ecology: Exploring the fascinating world of birds and their role in ecosystems. Campers will learn about bird anatomy, behavior, migration patterns, and habitat requirements, as well as the importance of bird conservation efforts to protect biodiversity and ecosystem health.

Wind Erosion: Understanding the processes and effects of wind erosion on landscapes, including desertification, soil degradation, and the formation of sand dunes. Campers will learn about the factors that contribute to wind erosion and measures to prevent or mitigate its impacts.

Nature Awareness and Observation Skills: Help campers develop their senses and awareness of the natural world through activities such as birdwatching, wildlife observation, and sensory awareness exercises.

Leave No Trace Principles: Educate campers about the principles of Leave No Trace, teaching them how to minimize their impact on the environment while enjoying outdoor activities responsibly.

Land Navigation Techniques: Learn how to use a map and compass to navigate through different terrains, understanding landmarks, orienting yourself, and plotting routes safely.

Wild Foraging: Discover the edible plants and fruits available in nature, and how to responsibly harvest them, while also learning about potential hazards and the importance of sustainability.

Primitive Survival Skills: Explore ancient techniques for surviving in the wild, such as shelter construction, fire making, water purification, and finding food without modern tools or equipment.

First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS): Acquire essential skills for providing immediate medical care including assessing injuries, CPR, treating wounds, and managing medical emergencies.

Wilderness Medicine and First Aid Scenarios: Conduct realistic first aid scenarios and wilderness medicine simulations to help campers develop the skills and confidence to respond effectively to medical emergencies in remote locations.

Plant Identification: Discover how to identify common plants and trees in the local environment, learning about their uses, habitats, and ecological significance, as well as any potential hazards or toxic species.

Native Animal Ecology: Explore the fascinating world of native wildlife, studying their behaviors, habitats, and ecological roles within the local ecosystem, while also learning about conservation and coexistence.

Forest Mapping: Learn to identify different tree species based on their leaves, bark, and other features, and how to create maps of forested areas using basic surveying techniques.

Survival Psychology and Mindset: Teach campers about the psychological aspects of survival, including stress management, resilience, and maintaining a positive mindset in challenging situations.

Nature Photography: Explore the art of nature photography, teaching campers how to capture the beauty of the natural world through techniques such as composition, lighting, and perspective.

Wilderness Survival Games: Organize fun and educational games and challenges that simulate real-life survival scenarios, encouraging teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.

Outdoor Leadership and Team Building: Provide leadership training and team-building exercises to empower campers to take on leadership roles and work collaboratively with their peers in outdoor settings.

Wildlife Tracking and Sign Identification: Introduce campers to the art of tracking and identifying animal signs such as tracks, scat, and other evidence of wildlife presence, while also learning about animal behavior and ecology.

A Day with Friendly Pollinators: One of Kyle’s honey bee hives will be brought in an observation box (the box safely retains all bees preventing any from escaping) to view the bees, speak on the great importance of pollinators, and enjoying freshly harvested honey.

Surf Rescue: Techniques and strategies for rescuing individuals in distress, including proper use of rescue equipment and ensuring the safety of both the rescuer and the rescued.

Reading Currents: Understanding how ocean currents work, including identifying rip currents, undertows, and other hazards, to enhance safety and improve water skills.

Surf Conditions: Learning to assess various surf conditions such as wave height, wind direction, and water temperature to determine the best times and locations for safe and enjoyable surfing experiences.

Tides: Exploring the causes and effects of tides on surf conditions, including how tides influence wave formation and the timing of high and low tides for optimal surfing opportunities.

Types of Marine Life: Introducing campers to the diverse marine life found in coastal ecosystems, including fish, marine mammals, and invertebrates, and their roles within the ocean ecosystem.

Breathing Techniques: Teaching proper breathing techniques for enhanced performance and safety while surfing, including breath control for staying calm in challenging situations.

Different Types of Fishing Methods: Providing an overview of various fishing techniques such as surf casting, fly fishing, and spearfishing, along with the equipment and skills required for each method.

Surf and Swim Lessons: Offering structured lessons for campers to develop surfing and swimming skills under the guidance of experienced instructors, tailored to different skill levels from beginners to advanced surfers.
